Tanduay set two records in one game, but that hardly mattered for coach Lawrence Chongson in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup.
“Those records mean nothing if we don’t make it to the next round,” Chongson said after the Rhum Masters overwhelmed Zark’s Burgers, 141-65, Monday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
“The only record we want is to be a champion.”
The Rhum Masters set new league records for most points scored in a game, eclipsing Racal Motors’ previous 140 against the Jawbreakers on June 8, and the biggest winning margin at 76, topping the 67-point blowout by Cignal over Gamboa Coffee Mix on June 15.
Jerwin Gaco wasted no time as he set the tone early, unloading 14 of his 21 points during the Rhum Masters’ 35-6 start.
James Martinez had a hand in the rout, too, as he went 5-of-8 from beyond the arc to finish with 23 points on top of nine assists.
Racal Motors also easily dispatched Gamboa Coffee Mix, 107-60, in the second game.
Rian Ayonayon drained 26 points on a 10-of-13 shooting clip and also dished out seven assists and five steals to lead Racal past Gamboa, which scored only 13 points in the second half. —WITH CARLO ANOLIN, KRISTOFER PURNELL
