Torres vows to do best for Philippines in ONE championship debut

MACAU—She may have stuttered in the press conference at The Venetian in Macau, but Filipino atomweight fighter Jomary Torres has the silent confidence ahead of her debut fight in ONE Championship.

Torres is set to fight Thai contender Rika Ishige in her first fight in the Asian promotion on Saturday in ONE: Kings & Conquerors here.

“I look at Rika and I know I can take her on,” said Torres in Filipino as if she flicked a switch to turn her confidence on. “I don’t know if I’ll knock her out or submit her but I know I can take her on and I’ll do my best to represent the Philippines.”

Torres looked like a wallflower in the elevated panel during the press conference but seemed at home when talking to Filipino reporters once she got out of the stage.

The 21-year-old gamely answered in her local tongue and expressed her eagerness to step into the ONE cage come Saturday at Cotai Arena.

“Even if this is my first time fighting at ONE, I’ll do my best to win,” said Torres. “I’m excited, I will fight Rika Ishige so I’m pretty excited for this opportunity.”

“I’m quite nervous but I will do my best for the Philippines.”
