MELBOURNE – The United States retained The Presidents Cup against the International team during the final day singles matches at Royal Melbourne on Sunday.
The US passed the required 17.5 points when Tiger Woods beat Aaron Baddeley four and three in the day’s penultimate singles match to win the biennial teams event.
Woods made five birdies to blast away Baddeley and have the distinction of clinching the winning point as he did in the last 2009 event in San Francisco.
The former world number one finished the teams match play event on a high after losing both his four-ball matches and Thursday’s foursomes.
It was the Americans’ seventh win in The Presidents Cup and prevented the Internationals from adding to their sole 1998 victory at Royal Melbourne.
The US team went into the final day’s singles leading by four points and although the Internationals got within two points at one stage the defending champions won with two singles matches still being played on the course.
