Teen fencers deliver silver, bronze for PH

KUALA LUMPUR A pair of teenaged fencers gifted the Philippines a silver and bronze in the women’s fencing foil event of the 29th Southeast Asian Games Monday at MITEC Hall 6.

Fifteen-year-old Samantha Kyle Catantan dropped a 15-7 decision to SIngapore’s Amita Marie Nicolette Berthi, 15-9, in the finals.

Catantan, a two-time MVP awardee in the UAAP fighting for University of the East, barged into the semis along with 16-year-old teammate Maxine Isabel Esteban.

Esteban also bowed to Berthi, 15-9, in the semis en route to the Singaporean’s gold medal triumph.

Catantan bested Nicole Mae Wong Hui Shan also of SIngapore, 15-14, in the semis.
