Capadocia blanks Nepalese netter

TAIPEI—Marian Jade Capadocia displayed a stronger all-around game as she blanked Nepal’s Kripa Sharma, 6-0, 6-0, Monday and cruised to the third round of tennis competitions in the 29th World University Games here.

Reaping the benefits of a three-month training in Amsterdam, Capadocia proved too strong for Sharma who was held to just five points and self-destructed with 10 double faults at Taipei Tennis Center.

The 21-year-old Capadocia will tangle with Mexico’s Victoria Rodriguez, seeded second, in the third round Tuesday.

Another Filipino, Sharyl de los Santos, drew a first round bye and advanced against Lebanon’s El Khouri Ata in a match being played at presstime.

It was another story in men’s play, however, as Jeleardo Amazona and Wilmer Sabas both crashed out of the first round.

Amazona lost to Mexico’s Alonso Delgado, 6-2, 6-1, while Sabas bowed to France’s Lucas Poullan, 6-0, 6-1.

The archers also headed to the exits in the round of 24 of the women’s recurve individual.

Meanwhile, Jaime Mejia of the athletics contingent was confined at a hospital here due to dengue.

The 130-strong Team Philippines here is being supported by San Miguel Corporation, Bdestank and Garfield Sportswear.
