Filipino jins, other bets struggle in Taipei 29th Summer Universiade

Filipino taekwondo jins had a rough start in the 29th Summer Universiade in Taipei.

Erson Macatangay yielded to Marat Niiazov of Kyrgyzstan, 16-21, in the men’s- 58kg, while Gabriel Joshua Ancheta bowed to Boris Krasnov of Russia, 2-29, in the men’s -68kg Wednesday.

Peebles Jerkin Pintucan, who drew a first-round bye, will meet Muhammet Vaglar of Turkey in the second round of the men’s -63kg.

Glenn Harold Salgado in the men’s +87kg and Ann Janeth Garcia in the women’s -53kg have yet to see action.

Taekwondo produced a silver medal through Samuel Thonas Morrison in the 2011 Shenzhen (China) Universiade.

Other Filipino bets sent by the Federation of School Spirts Association of the Philippines and sponsored by San Miguel Corp. also suffered losses.

Jingky Obanon of Rizal Technologial University clocked 1:04.43 in one of five qualifying heats and failed to advance in the women’s 400m.

Sean Michael Kaufman of the University of the Philippines and Yuhei Go of Xavier University-Cagayan de Oro also failed to qualify in the men’s 100m with Kaufman clocking 11.18 and Go clocking 11.61.

Rogil Pablo of St. Benilde finished ninth out of 13 bets in men’s triple jump with 14.54m on his second try.

Alliah Saliendra of TUP and Carmenrose Matabuena of UE failed to advance in women’s 100m butterfly with Saliendra clocking 1:30.80 in Heat 1 and Matabuena clocking 1:14. 27 in Heat 2.

Martin Jacob Pupos of Diliman College also crashed out in men’s 100m freestyle with a time of 57.44.
