DAVAO—Teener Miya Legaspi scored an even-par 72 worth 54 PAL points to tow Manila Southwoods-Masters to a 154 total and a four-point lead over Del Monte in the championship division after the first round of the sixth Philippine Airlines (PAL) Ladies Interclub at the Rancho Palos Verdes here.
The 13-year-old Legaspi, a former US Kids World champion, had five birdies and as many bogeys in nines of 36-36. Jayvie Agojo scored a 52 and Lora Roberto added a 48 to round out Southwoods’ output.
Del Monte’s 150 leaned on the bogey-free, day’s-best 58 points (68) of Lovelyn Guioguio that cushioned Apple Fudolin’s 48 and Kristine Leonen’s 44. Taj Tabanas’ 39 did not count.
“We hope to give Southwoods an even better fight tomorrow,” said Del Monte skipper Maribel San Miguel.
“I was surprised with my score,” Guioguio said. “I haven’t played Palos Verdes for a decade.”
Del Monte and Southwoods, two of the touted squads in the Men’s Regular Interclub, are fielding their top players in the Ladies Interclub which carries the theme “She Swings!”
In the Founders division, former national ace Anya Tanpinco matched Guioguio’s 68 to pace Negros’ 132, 11 clear of second-placed Alabang’s 121.
The tournament was temporarily scrapped in 1988 before it was revived this year by PAL with executive Dinah Mae Flores heading the organizing committee.
Southwoods’ Legends squad pooled in a 109 to zoom to the top of the standings in the Sportswriters division.
Rancho Palos Verdes leads the Friendship division with a 97, six better than Apo Golf’s 91.
The PAL Ladies Interclub is backed by classic sponsors Stargate Media, Business Mirror, Hi-Definition Radio, Gecas, Crossover, Kumare Klub on TV5, Boeing, Radio Mindanao Network, Airbus and Manila Hotel.
