Stallion Laguna, JPV continue surge

Jess Melliza knocked in four goals as Stallion Laguna continued its midseason run with a 5-0 demolition of Ilocos United on Sunday in the Philippines Football League at Biñan Football Stadium.

Determined to catch up with the leaders after a sputtering start to the season, Stallion once again turned to the in-form Melliza to overcome an Ilocos side that remained winless in 18 matches this season. Melliza now has 12 goals this season.

Fitch Arboleda also found the back of the net for coach Ernie Nierras’ side, which improved to 23 points after picking up its sixth win.

Over at Rizal Memorial Stadium, JPV Marikina leaned on a Masaki Yanagawa strike to subdue Kaya Makati, 1-0, and move up to fourth spot.

It was JPV’s eighth win in 18 matches as the Marikina side hiked its tally to 27 points, two ahead of Ceres-Negros, which has only played 12 matches so far this season due to its AFC Cup campaign.

Yanagawa stabbed home a corner kick in the 34th minute for the only goal of the match.

Meanwhile, Global Cebu denied the Davao Aguilas of a first win, after coming away with a 2-2 draw at Davao Sports Complex in Tagum City on Saturday.
