MANILA, Philippines—Marian Jade Capadocia pulled off a stunning 6-1, 6-1 upset win over top seed Kanika Vaidya of Indonesia in girls’ singles Thursday in the Phinma International Juniors Championships Week 1 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Maika Jae Tanpoco and Tamitha Nguyen also advanced to the quarterfinals along with local top boys’ hope Jurence Zosimo Mendoza, who whipped Briton James Elliott, 6-1, 6-1.
The 16-year-old Capadocia took 4-0 leads in both sets and encountered little opposition from the Indonesian to set up a quarterfinal battle with eighth seed Eden Silva of Great Britain, who ripped Russian Anna Iakovleva, 6-0, 6-0.
Tanpoco crushed Russian Anna Grigoryan, 6-2, 6-0, while Nguyen downed Anna’s sister Tatyana, 7-5, 6-2.
Tanpoco will next face second seed Sanae Otha of Japan, who eliminated Helen Rabot of Great Britain, 6-2, 6-2. Nguyen set up a duel against Japanese 5th seed Miki Kobayashi, who took out Filipino Jasmine Ho, 6-1, 6-3.
Mendoza, a practice player of the PH Davis Cup team, will next play fifth seed Yu Cheng-yu of Chinese Taipei.
