Amit, Kiamco-Chua advance; bowlers toppled

ASHGABAT—Having won the world championships twice, Rubilen Amit knows it takes a lot of patience to carve a successful path going to the women’s 10-ball pool podium.

The Filipino billiards ace started the journey toward that direction with a convincing 7-2 win over Thi Ngoc Huyen Huynh on Sunday to progress to the quarterfinals of her favorite event in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (Aimag).

Amit, the 2009 and 2013 WPA Women’s World 10-Ball Champion, easily reached the hill on the seventh frame, gave Huynh a breather on the next set before finishing off her Vietnamese rival to the applause of the crowd at Billiard Sports Arena here.

“I have to be patient every game,” said Amit, bronze medalist in the same event during the 2013 edition in South Korea.

Up next for Amit is Iran’s Parisa Mangli, who toppled Aminath Azra of Maldives, 7-3, in the opening round.

Chezka Centeno, fresh from a silver medal in women’s 9-ball pool the other day, didn’t make it to the quarterfinals following a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Chen Siming of China.

The Philippines didn’t produce a medal yesterday and remained 18th overall among 62 countries with two gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Warren Kiamco and Johann Chua could increase the country’s medal tally after advancing to the semifinals of the men’s 9-ball pool scotch doubles with a 9-8 victory over Andrew Kong Bu Hong and Lo Ho Sum of Hong Kong.

Sambo fighter Renzo Miguel Cazenas (men’s -90kg) advanced to the repechage for a possible bronze despite absorbing a 9-0 setback against Iraj Amirkhani of Iran in the preliminary round.

Over at Bowling Center, Kenneth Chua and Jo-Mar Jumapao rolled a combined output of 406 points and missed entering the semifinals in men’s doubles.
