Mel Paulino Abundo, husband of former PSC commisisoner Tisha Abundo and brother of International Chess Federation (FIDE) general secretary Casto “Toti” Abundo, passed away Saturday night after a bout with diabetes. He was 63.

Abundo is survived by wife Tisha; children Michael Patrick, Mark Paul, Melvin Peter and Flo Abundo, and Michelle Pauline; brothers Toti, Ronnie and Glenn; and sisters Lynn and Wilma.

His remains lie in state at the Loyola Memorial Park Marikina Chapel. Interment is at the Philam Homes Chapel in Quezon City on Nov. 30.

The late Abundo, a practicing lawyer until his retirement five years ago, finished his elementary and high school studies at Ateneo.

He attended college and pursued law at the University of the East, where he met Tisha, then a varsity volleyball player.

Abundo was only in his sophomore year in college when he became the first editor in chief of UE Dawn, the school’s official newspaper.
