MANILA, Philippines—Archer Bianca Gotuaco, a 14-year-old who trained in the United States, seized the first gold medal in the National Capital Region qualifying leg of the 2011 Batang Pinoy Games Tuesday.
A mainstay of the International School-Manila team, Gotuaco ruled the girls’ Fita double 18-meter individual event after compiling 547 points out of 600 in the 60-arrow event.
Diane Elises was a second with 458 points followed by Caitlin Miciane with 450.
“I’m so happy the way I finished my rounds,” said Gotuaco, silver medalist in the US Games last Summer, making her a promising candidate for the 2013 Youth Olympics. “I’m not expecting too much, but I always try my best in every competition I play.”
A Palarong Pambansa campaigner, Gotuaco made it to the US Games after a runner-up finish in the California State Fita tournament.
“She’s improving and the support of her parents has really made Bianca a better archer,” said her coach Fermin Barranechea, a former national archer. “With her dedication and character, I would say she could dominate the field in the future.”
Hostilities kicked off yesterday in other venues in Metro Manila.
The event started Monday with Vice President Jejomar Binay as the guest speaker during the opening ceremonies.
Commissioners Chito Loyzaga and Jolly Gomez of the organizing Philippine Sports Commission graced the event along with representatives of national sports associations.
Gold and silver medalists of the five qualifying legs will advance to the national finals in Naga City on Dec. 10 to 13.
The Batang Pinoy is sponsored by Smart Sports, Maynilad, Summit Mineral Water and supported by Jollibee, Negros Navigation, Aboitiz, Standard Insurance Inc. and the British Council. June Navarro
