Johnny Arcilla and Ronard Joven fought off top seeds Patrick John Tierro and Jeson Patrombon, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8, Saturday to claim the men’s doubles title of the Philippine Columbian Association Open at PCA shell-clay courts.
It was a consolation of sorts for eight-time singles champion Arcilla and Joven, who were booted out early in men’s singles.
Earlier, accidental partners Bambi Zoleta and Akiko de Guzman weathered a turbulent first set to overcome Khryzelle Sampaton and Rachelle De Guzman, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
De Guzman said she wanted to focus on singles but could not pass up the chance to partner with Zoleta.
The 25-year-old Zoleta, a former singles champ, found herself needing a doubles partner after her original teammate backed out.
Arcilla and Joven ran away with P50,000 while Tierro and Patrombon settled for P25,000. Zoleta and De Guzman won P20,000.
