AFTER LURING world-class triathletes from 19 countries, the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) vows to stage a bigger ITU-K-Swiss Subic Bay International Triathlon (Subit) competition next year.

“We will sharpen our organizational capabilities to maintain our world-class status,” said TRAP president Tom Carrasco Jr. yesterday.

The recent 18th edition of Subit at the Subic Bay Freeport drew 732 triathletes, up from the 670 participants in 2010.

“Subit next year will be bigger and better,” said Carrasco.

Swiss Reto Hug and Australian Natalie Van Coevorden bagged the male and female elite crowns, respectively, in the race sanctioned by the International Triathlon Union and the Asian Triathlon Confederation.

Three Filipino teen racers pulled off podium finishes, making them strong candidates for the national team to the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

Philip Jurolan captured the silver in the junior elite male category, while the 14-year-old pair of Gabriel Allen Santiago and Magali Bernasconi Echauz led the 13-15 mini sprint winners.

The Fitness First Body Combat squad made up of local racers also set a record by clinching the team event title for the fourth consecutive year. Jasmine W. Payo
