BAGUIO City—Coming up with its best effort in the final day, Manila Southwoods made it look easy in ruling the Fil division of the 68th Department of Tourism Fil-Am Invitational.
Drawing a two-under-par 59 worth 38 points from Tom Kim, Southwoods closed out with a 134 over demanding Baguio Country Club here and won the centerpiece event by 29 points over Forest Hills as the Carmona-based squad completed a double after also running away with the Am championship.
Veteran Jun Jun Plana carded 33 like Carl Corpus and Aidric Chan as Southwoods turned what was expected into a tight final day into a rout of Forest Hills, which started the day just nine points behind.
“We knew that they could come up with such a round, because they are the best amateurs in the land,” said Jerome Delariarte, Southwoods’ non-playing skipper.
Jude Eustaquio returned a 33 and Luis Antonio Asistio 30 in leading Forest Hills.
It was the 15th championship in the last 21 years for Southwoods, the most by any team. It was made sweeter by the sweep as its Am squad won by a whopping 50 points over Razon’s of Guagua after drawing 34 points from Jama Reyes, 33 from Chepe Dulay and 31 from Lanz Uy for 501 overall.
