Lady chiefs up; Lions drop to 4th

Defending champion Arellano University steamrolled Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-19, 25-12, 25-11, for its second straight win in the NCAA Season 93 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at Filoil Flying V Centre.

Necole Ebuen had 15 points while Jovielyn Prado added 12 for the Lady Chiefs who are atop the 12-team field at 2-0.

The win also marked Arellano’s 14th straight win that started in Season 92.

Arellano head coach Obet Javier said they have to start piling up wins as the format gives the team with the most victories a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals.

“We can’t afford mistakes in this kind of format,” said Javier.

In another game, Perpetual Help coach Macky Cariño debuted with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-22 victory over Lyceum.

Maria Lourdes Clemente led the Lady Altas with 14 points.

In the football tournament, San Beda lost the top seeding and slid to fourth after its midfielder Dane Peñaflor was deemed ineligible.

Arellano’s Peter Cayco, football organizing committee chair, said San Beda admitted its mistake and forfeited two of the three games Peñaflor played in.

“San Beda discovered one of their players failed to meet eligibility requirements,” said Cayco.
Peñaflor played when San Beda beat Emilio Aguinaldo College and Mapua and lost to Arellano.

San Beda will face top seed College of St. Benilde and No. 2 Arellano will take on No. 3 Lyceum in Monday’s semifinal round. —BONG LOZADA, RANDOLPH B. LEONGSON, INQUIRER.NET
