MANILA, Philippines—Defending champion NLEX, minus six key cogs, shoots for a third triumph in four against Blackwater in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup Monday at the Trinity University Gym.
“We’re in a tough situation right now, but no excuses,” said NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez, who will miss five of his varsity standouts when the Road Warriors tangle with Blackwater at 2 p.m.
Newcomer Dub Unlimited, fresh off a stunning victory over league-leader Freego Jeans, goes for another upset against Boracay Rum in the second game at 4 p.m.
The Wheelers picked up a surprise first win in five games while also pinning a first loss on the Jeans Makers, 78-62, last Nov. 24.
“We’re in a period of adjustment, but hopefully this will continue,” said Dub coach Junel Mendiola, who leaned on Marlon Gomez, Raymond Aguilar and Roel Hugnatan in their breakthrough win.
Fernandez said his Road Warriors need to work doubly hard in the absence of San Sebastian’s star trio of Calvin Abueva, Ian Sangalang and Ronald Pascual, San Beda’s Dave Marcelo and Ateneo’s Emman Monfort who will be playing for their schools in the PCCL Final Four also set Monday.
Garvo Lanete, another NLEX recruit, will miss his third straight game due to a shoulder injury.
Meanwhile, PBA commissioner Chito Salud slapped a one-game suspension on Big Chill center Jewel Ponferada for hitting Freego’s John Lopez in their game last Thursday.
