San Beda trips Perpetual in grueling three-setter

San Beda overcame University of Perpetual Help in a long three-setter, 28-26, 25-18, 29-27, to take its second straight win in the NCAA Season 93 women’s volleyball tournament Thursday at Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Red Spikers joined College of St. Benilde and defending champion Arellano University with 2-0 records atop the standings while the Lady Altas are at 1-1.

San Beda took a 22-19 lead in the third set before Perpetual clawed back and took over, 23-22, off a service ace from Maria Clemente.

The Lady Red Spikers seemed ready to put the game away after clinching 24-22 match point on Nieza Viray’s spike, but a back-and-forth saw the scores knotted up at 27-27.

Cesca Raqraquin inspired San Beda with two straight points to finish the match off.

“I’m proud of the grit the team showed today,” said San Beda head coach Nemesio Gavino in Filipino. “And although we still lack the consistency, I know we have the maturity so I trust the players no matter what.”

Viray powered San Beda with 20 points while skipper Racraquin added 13.

Clemente had 16 points to lead the Lady Alyss while Cindy Imbo pitched in 11.
