Arellano wastes no time hammering Letran; JRU continues impressive rise

Defending champion Arellano University humbled Letran in three sets, 25-17, 25-17, 25-12, in the NCAA Season 93 women’s volleyball tournament Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Chiefs remained undefeated after three games to stay on top of the standings while the Lady Knights dropped to 0-3.

Necole Ebuen and Regine Arocha had 11 points apiece to lead Arellano while Jovielyn Prado added seven.

Arellano head coach Obet Javier was impressed with his team’s tenacity despite facing a winless team.

“I think everything we did in practice reflected in the game today,” said Javier in Filipino. “I feel they played with the seriousness because we talked with each other that we should defend this title we won last season.”

Jose Rizal University also hammered Emilio Aguinaldo College in straight sets, 25-20, 25-16, 25-16, and squeezed into the top four.

The Lady Bombers secured a 2-1 record while the Generals remained on the lookout for their first win as they dropped to 0-3.

Shola Alvarez unleashed her might on the Lady Generals as she led JRU’s assault with 24 points, three more than what her teammates put up combined.

JRU head coach Mia Tioseco said it was their five-set win over last season’s runner-up San Sebastian that helped her team build the confidence.

“The San Sebastian win was really a factor,” said Tioseco in Filipino. “The girls now believe that they can compete and they were more aggressive today than before.”

“I hope this continues and I also saw that they can easily recover and compose themselves when they get rattled.”

Alvarez, who had 28 points against the Lady Stags, echoed her coach’s sentiments saying they should be prepared for the remaining games.

“I wish this continues for us and of course our next opponents aren’t pushovers so we have to train even harder,” said Alvarez in Filipino.
