Benilde outlasts Arellano in shootout for NCAA football title
College of St. Benilde worked its magic in the clutch and won 3-2 in penalties over Arellano University to claim the NCAA Season 93 men’s football title Wednesday at Rizal Memorial Pitch.
Blazers goalie Jake Vicen denied Robert Corsame Jr.’s attempt from the spot and sealed Benilde’s Game 3 win and its first championship in eight years.
Benilde head coach Marlon Maro, who owns two of the school’s four titles, said it was his players who delivered the championship and not him.
“The players deserve this championship,” said Maro.
Miguel Artillera gave Benilde the 1-0 lead at the 38th minute but Corsame, a member of the under-23 team, equalized just three minutes later.
After falling 2-1 in the shootout, the Blazers then relied on Renz Tulayba and Dean Embarle for their second and third penalties.
