San Miguel Beer’s Chris Ross and Chico Lanete, who supposedly swapped places for free throw attempts in the final 4.6 seconds of the Beermen’s losing game against Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday, have been summoned to appear at the Commissioner’s Office.
At the same time, the league is also poised to penalize game officials who failed to control the situation that tainted the ending of what was otherwise one of the best games of the young conference.
With the game in the balance, Lanete drew a foul during a mad scramble inside the paint as Ross stood near halfcourt after making the steal that led to Arwind Santos taking the potential game-tying three-pointer from deep right corner.
Eric Castro, the PBA head of technical operations, went to the press room to explain why Ross was slapped with a technical foul for taking the first of two free throws originally awarded to Lanete.
Ginebra won, 100-96, after LA Tenorio made the free throw off the Ross technical.
