MANILA, Philippines—Far Eastern University made the most of its second chance in the extra period after University of the East bungled the potential game-winner in regulation.
The Tamaraws finally subdued the Warriors behind RR Garcia and Reil Cervantes in the extension, pulling out an 83-77 victory to keep the solo lead in the 73rd UAAP men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the PhilSports Arena.
Garcia unloaded 23 points, the last two coming with just 19.7 seconds left to give the Tamaraws an 82-77 buffer, after the Warriors had come within three, 80-77, in the extra period.
The Warriors earlier blew a chance to upset the Tamaraws when Raphy Reyes missed a wide-open undergoal shot from a drop pass by Paul Lee in the dwindling seconds that forged the overtime at 72-72.
The Tamaraws raised their record to 8-1, just three days after the Adamson Falcons snapped the title favorites’ seven-game winning run with a 64-63 decision.
Adamson sustained its magical run as the Falcons outlasted University of Santo Tomas in double overtime, 81-76, to strengthen their hold of second spot at 7-2.
Falcon Janus Lozada knocked in a triple with 3.8 seconds left to forge the second extra period, 72-72, after the Tigers lost a 69-65 lead with just 38.2 ticks left.
Cervantes buried 19 points, including back-to-back baskets that sparked the Tamaraws to an 80-74 lead early in the extension. The veteran forward also finished with nine rebounds and three assists.
“That game against Adamson was a test of character,” said coach Glenn Capacio.
Lozada scored 19 points for the Falcons, who capitalized on the Tigers’ erratic finish to secure their fourth straight win.
“I reminded the players that our biggest enemy would be complacency,” said Adamson coach Leo Austria. “After two big games against La Salle and FEU, I knew the players were tired but I’m proud that they also refused to lose.”
