UAAP football: Ateneo ekes out 2-1 win vs La Salle

Jarvey Gayoso scored a brace as defending champion Ateneo downed La Salle, 2-1, in the UAAP Season 80 men’s football tournament Thursday at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The reigning MVP picked up the scoring in the second half, first putting the Blue Eagles ahead at the 50th minute before doubling the lead at the 66th minute where he eluded two defenders before sending the ball to the back of the net.

Mauro Acot chalked one for the Green Archers at the 83rd minute, but the Taft side’s comeback bid fell short in the end.

With the victory, Ateneo has leveled itself with La Salle at six points apiece as they sit tied at third place.

In the other matches, University of the Philippines conceded its first goal of the season, but that didn’t rain on its 4-1 victory over Adamson to take the top spot with nine points.

King Miyagi and JB Borlongan both had braces to tow the Fighting Maroons to their third victory, but had to deal with Falcons’ Jusue Pilarca scoring at the 12th minute, much to the dismay of coach Anto Gonzales.

“We weren’t sharp. We were lazy. We weren’t thinking,” he said.

University of Santo Tomas and National University, meanwhile, engaged in a scoreless draw as the Growling Tigers fell to second place with their seven points.
