Bernadeth Pons had her lowest-scoring game for Far Eastern University this season, but the Lady Tamaraws’ captain is fine with sharing the offensive limelight with her teammates.
FEU’s senior hitter had just nine points in FEU’s sweep of University of the Philippines, 25-23, 25-23, 24-19, in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament and Pons is actually relieved that her teammates were able to fulfill the team’s demands.
“I’m happy with my scoring because that means everybody can contribute,” said Pons in Filipino Saturday at Filoil Flying V Centre. “I even told them that volleyball comes easy when everyone scores.”
Against UP, Heather Guino-o and Toni Rose Basas carried the scoring load finishing with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Pons was FEU’s leading scorer in all three games prior to its win against the Lady Maroons and had eclipsed the 20-point mark twice.
After Saturday’s matches, Pons is the fourth-leading scorer of the season averaging 16.5 points-per-game, just half a point behind third placers Diana Carlos of UP and Jhoanna Maraguinot of Ateneo.
FEU improved to a 2-2 record, sharing the fourth spot with Ateneo in the standings, and Pons is confident they can start putting together a winning run at this point in the first round.
“We still have three remaining games in the first round and this win was really big for us because we got a lot of confidence from this,” said Pons. “Our morale really improved after this one.”
