Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar’s time-tested formula for winning championships has always been built on trust.
And their recent victory over the Arellano University Chiefs in Game Three of the NCAA men’s volleyball title was a testament to Acaylar’s unflinching belief that anyone of the players he injected into the game would deliver.
One example is Rey Taneo, an opposite spiker who converted himself into a setter in a hurry after starting setter Warren Catipay sprained his right ankle late in the opening set. He finished with 11 points, seven digs and 22 excellent sets, an effort that won him the Finals MVP trophy.
There were also other heroes.
James Mark Bation scattered nine points, most of it came in the fourth set when the Las Piñas-based school overhauled seven-point leads twice, the last at 12-19.
It resulted to a 2-1 title series win by the Altas and an 11th men’s title for both the school and Acaylar himself.
And Acaylar is a firm believer of the word.
“It’s simple, you have to trust everybody. I trust all of my players, each one of them. I know all the players I put inside the game will score or contribute. All of them are my lucky charm,” said Acaylar.
