Donnie Nietes, the longest reigning Filipino champion, isn’t the type of fighter who settles for a second-rate opponent.
Nietes, who retained his IBF flyweight title after stopping Argentina’s Juan Carlos Reveco in the seventh round Sunday in the US, wants either former four-division champion Roman Gonzalez or WBC super flyweight titleholder Srisaket Sor Rungvisai next.
“There has been talk of me fighting ‘Chocolatito’ (Gonzalez) next. That’s a fight I want. I’d also like to fight [Sor Rungvisai],” Nietes said in an interview with BoxingScene.com after improving to 41-1-4, 23 KOs.
Gonzalez (46-2, 38 KOs), who was widely considered as the top pound-for-pound fighter until he lost to Sor Rungvisai in March of last year by majority decision.
The two fought again six months later and this time, the Thai champion didn’t leave anything to chance by knocking out the hard-hitting Nicaraguan in the fourth round.
Sor Rungvisai (45-4-1, 40 KOs) also kept his belt on Sunday after edging Mexican challenger Juan Francisco Estrada by majority decision in a slugfest.
