There are so many concerns hounding Ricky Vargas as he begins his stint as head of the Philippine Olympic Committee.

Looking to get as much help as possible, Vargas will recommend boxing vice president Patrick Gregorio as his secretary general when the POC executive board convenes next week.

“He’s a close colleague of mine and I’ve been working with him for so long,” said Vargas.

POC rules state that the president can appoint a secretary general, but it is subject to the approval of the executive board. The official must have served as president, vice president or secretary general of his NSA for at least two years.

“He was the [secretary general] at [Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines] for eight years and is currently its vice president,” said Vargas.

Meanwhile, several NSAs raised concerns Wednesday on the new allowance scheme that the PSC has approved, which lowers the monthly stipend of athletes in the training pool from P10,600 to P6,000.

PSC deputy executive director Rachel Dumuk, in a dialogue with NSA heads, said the implementation of the new scheme would be temporarily suspended pending further studies.
