The Philippines’ Monica Torres and John Leerams Chicano recently topped the middle distance category of the Powerman Asia Duathlon Championships Malaysia 2018 in Putrajaya. Torres clocked 3 hours, 6 minutes and 42 seconds, beating Japan’s Airi Sawada (3:18:04) and compatriot Jelsie Sabado (3:32:43). It was a Philippine sweep in the male category as Chicano (2:47:26), Emmanuel Commendador (2:51:54) and Raymund Torio (2:55:45) all made the podium. The Standard Insurance-backed Torres likewise placed third in the elite event of the 10.2K run-60.62K bike-10.2K run race behind Hungary’s Anna Eberhardt-Halasz (2:54:04) and The Netherlands’ Miriam Van Reijen (3:04:04). Chicano’s time was similarly good for third place in the male elite class behind three-time winner Thomas Bruins of The Netherlands (2:38:17) and Matt Smith of Australia (2:47:26). A total of 3,756 duathletes from 41 countries competed. —Romina S. Austria
