FEU makes surprise run to Street Dance crown

Far Eastern University Street Alliance never envisioned itself to take the big prize in the UAAP Season 80 Street Dance Competition.

That’s what captain Rei Sioson said when his group ruined the duopoly of University of the Philippines and De La Salle in the yearly exhibition Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

FEU became just the third winner of the competition after UP and La Salle each won three of the first six titles.

“I’m really thankful for our coach [Randell San Gregorio] because we never expected to win the first place,” said Sioson in Filipino. “We just wanted to have a perfect run or even just the third place.”

What supported Sioson’s thoughts was the team’s limited time to prepare for the competition.

San Gregorio said the current Street Alliance was formed in January of 2018 and their practice sessions had to be held at night so as not to be a conflict to the class schedules of the dancers.

Sioson himself has to travel back to Morayta after his classes at FEU Makati for their practice.

“We really put in a collaborative effort, all the members had to do their part,” said Sioson, who is a graduating Financial Management student. “We were able to complete our practices even though we had these schedule problems.”

For all their troubles, the Street Alliance finished with 85.75 points and won P70,000.
