In just her first try, volleyball star turned beauty queen Michele Gumabao was crowned 2018 Binibining Pilipinas-Globe Sunday night.

The former De La Salle spiker had her shining moment at Smart Araneta Coliseum, the site of her previous epic battles on the volleyball floor, as she earned the right to represent the country in the Miss Globe pageant this year. Crowd-favorite Catriona Gray was named Miss Universe-Philippines.

Gumabao may have been a newcomer in the pageant world, but Gumabao immediately turned heads since she announced her application for Bb. Pilipinas.

Her amazing transformation from a formidable co-captain for the three-time UAAP volleyball champions into a regal queen didn’t go unnoticed.

Already used to the pressure that comes with being a star athlete, Gumabao was also able to bring her feistiness on the court into the Bb. Pilipinas stage, which made her one of the favorites going into the event.

Exemplifying beauty and brains, Gumabao also impressed in her answer during the Q&A about fighting fake news.

She was also named Miss Creamsilk, one of the special awards given out during coronation night.

Interestingly, Gumabao’s former on-court rival Alyssa Valdez was one of the judges for the night.

Ateneo guard Thirdy Ravena was also part of the judging panel.
