Baguio City bets overtake Laguna

NAGA CITY—Baguio City scored big in the final day of competition on Tuesday to overtake Laguna in the gold medal tally of the Batang Pinoy 2011 national finals here.

Baguio City won four golds, one silver and seven bronze medals in taekwondo to overtake erstwhile leader Laguna in the overall standings.

Baguio City finished with a 23-13-19 tally while Laguna dropped to second place with a 21-19-24 count.
Zamboanga City (16-9-5) was third while Manila (15-10-12) was fourth and Quezon City (9-18-15) fifth. Completing the top 10 finishers were Davao City (7-6-2), Bacolod City (6-7-9), Lipa City (5-1-2), Antipolo, Rizal (4-2-2) and La Union Province (4-2-1).

Bagging the gold for Baguio City in taekwondo were Suzzaine Gleen Caslangen in the girls’ lightweight, Brighty Rio Marie Salazar in the girls’ heavyweight, Christian Duntugan in the boys’ finweight, Tristan Dale Cayago in the boys’ flyweight and John Gervin Astrologo in the boys’ featherweight.

The other taekwondo gold medalists were Irenee Bermejo of Bacolod City in the girls’ finweight, Johanna Lyde Razon of Quezon City in the girls’ flyweight, Elyzia Baluyot of Manila in the girls’ bantamweight, Jessalyn Domingo of Zamboanga City in the girls’ featherweight, Marie Hanz Espina of Cebu in the girls’ welterweight, Kristell Kate Salmon of Gen. Santos City in the girls’ middleweight, Erick Evangelista of Cavite in the boys’ bantamweight, Paolo Jazmines of Mandaluyong in the boys’ lightweight, Danile Carlo Perez of Davao Del Norte in the boys’ welterweight, Kirk Militante of Makati City in the boys’ middleheavy and Jean Ralph Aquino of Pangasinan in the boys’ heavyweight.

Misamis Oriental, meanwhile, pocketed two golds in boxing courtesy of brothers Rafael Jalnaiz in the minimumweight (38 kg) and Roberto Miguel in the paperweight (44 kg).
