La Salle repeats as UAAP women’s football champion, beats UST

Kyla Inquig pulled off a brace as De La Salle outlasted University of Santo Tomas, 2-1, to take the championship in the UAAP Season 80 women’s football tournament Thursday at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Inquig sealed the Lady Archers’ second straight title when she let fly ascreamer from out of the box in the 80th minute.

De La Salle are now level with Far Eastern University for the most women’s football titles with 10.

Inquig, who was named MVP of the tournament, found the back of the net in the 12th minute to give La Salle a 1-0 lead before Shelah Cadag scored the equalizer for the Tigresses 10 minutes later.

De La Salle didn’t have UST’s number during the eliminations after losing two games to the Tigresses, but it ultimately scored the victory when it mattered the most.

In the men’s division, reigning MVP Jarvey Gayoso scored a double to lead Ateneo to a 4-0 thrashing of University of the East.

The defending champions Blue Booters have now advanced to the semifinals joining University of the Philippines.

Ateneo maintained a clean sheet for the fifth time in the second round as it accumulated 28 points in the tournament.

Gayoso, now with a league-best 15 goals, found the back of the net in the 18th minute against UE and completed his brace in the first half stoppage time.

Rupert Baña and Sam Lim rounded out the scoring affair for the Blue Booters in the second half.

In the other game in the men’s division, rookie Fidel Tacardon pulled off a hat trick as UP grounded Adamson University 5-1.
