Tornadoes pummel Lifesavers

Channon Thompson got to the country only two weeks ago but is feeling at home already.

The 24-year-old import from Trinidad and Tobago banged in 27 points and led Foton to 25-21, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20 crushing of Generika-Ayala in the Chooks-To-Go Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at Batangas City Coliseum on Saturday night.

“We had a great time and had fun out there,” she said. “I love playing with these girls.”

The Tornadoes inched closer to a twice-to-beat bonus in the quarterfinals after rising to 5-4 and staying in fourth spot. The Lifesavers sank to 2-7.

What made the win special for Thompson was what she described as “strong teamwork” displayed by the Tornadoes, who tapped her services in mid-conference, replacing Brooke Kranda.

The unexpected change created a buzz in social media, but Thompson’s low-key, highly-effective performances silenced critics as the Tornadoes won two games in the Pool Phase.
“We pooled our resources together and played as one,” said Thompson. —MARC REYES
