The PBA is turning back the hands of time and bringing the legends back to the hard court in a classic showcase for a good cause set this September.
The league’s greats will make a comeback as San Miguel Beer and Alaska and Ginebra and Purefoods renew their rivalries in a double-header at Smart Araneta Coliseum on either September 9 or 16.
The proceeds of the project spearheaded by Samahan ng mga Dating Propesyonal na Basketbolista ng Pilipinas will go to a trust fund to support former PBA players who have fallen on hard times.
“We sought the PBA’s support and they gave us a warm reception especially because this in an event for a cause,” said former Crispa superstar Atoy Co, who is the founding president of the association.
Former Crispa teammate Philip Cezar serves as the group’s vice president, former Toyota player Ed Cordero is the secretary, Allan Caidic is the treasurer, and Alvin Patrimonio, Kenneth Duremdes, Jojo Lastimosa, Pido Jarencio and Art dela Cruz are part of the Board.
“They put up a foundation that will be ready to help their peers. We’re cooperating with them and we’re giving them all-out support,” said PBA commissioner Willie Marcial. “We’ll help their foundation. Once it blooms, they will really help a lot of our former players here.”
Those who are expected to see action are legends like Ramon Fernandez, Ato Agustin, Hector Calma, Johnny Abarrientos, Bong Hawkins, Jeffrey Cariaso, Jerry Codinera, Chito Loyzaga, Vince Hizon, Marlou Aquino, Noli Locsin, and Bal David.
“We’ll be inviting all former PBA players to be there,” said Co.
This won’t be the first time the legends will have a reunion game of sorts, with players from Crispa and Toyota playing back in 2003, as well as an exhibition among the league’s 25 greatest players.
