After witnessing the best in the recent Palarong Pambansa, Sen. Sonny Angara has pushed for the creation of the Philippine High School for Sports that can shape future sports heroes and world-class Filipino athletes.
Angara’s Senate Bill 1332 envisions the PHSS to provide support to and develop the athletic skills of students.
“Aside from bringing honor to their regions, Palarong Pambansa is the biggest venue for our young athletes, especially from the provinces, to showcase their skills in the hopes of getting recruited by national sports associations and by top universities and colleges,” said Angara.
While the Department of Education has pinpointed one high school in each region armed with a special program in sports, no clear training program and selection criteria are in place.
Angara said the PHSS shall put special emphasis on physical education and sports development subjects in an effort to mold students for a career in sports.
