As expected, graduating stars Mary Joy Baron, Kim Kianna Dy and Dawn Macandili showed up for defending champion La Salle in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball Finals against Far Eastern University Saturday.

But the Lady Spikers also needed a big lift from super sub May Luna in the third set to beat Far Eastern University in a hard-fought three-setter, 29-27, 25-21, 25-22.

Luna only played one full set and made it count. She converted timely hits as part of a pivotal 7-0 surge in the third set that put La Salle in the driver’s seat, 19-15, after falling behind by five, 8-3.

“I just don’t want coach to think that I’m not rewarding his trust in me,” said Luna, who finished with nine points, seven of which off spikes, in Filipino. “I don’t want coach to lose that trust.”

The third-year outside hitter’s latest performance has certainly made a good account of herself.

With the Lady Spikers trailing, Luna pushed her team ahead, 16-15, with back-to-back service aces that took the air out of the Lady Tamaraws.

La Salle goes for a third consecutive crown on Wednesday.
