There’s a saying that goes, “you win some, you lose some” but in the case of Columbian, “you win big, you lose big” would be more fitting based on their first six games in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
So far, it’s been an up-and-down conference for the Dyip, who either win by a wide margin or lose in lopsided fashion.
Columbian head coach Ricky Dandan knows exactly what causes his team’s inconsistent play.
“That’s mostly because of our defense, we weren’t able to execute our defensive plan, and it looked like we did not have a defensive plan at all,” said Dandan after losing to Magnolia 126-101 Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Our defense feeds our offense and every time we’re able to make stops and we’re aggressive defensively and we’re not missing assignments we transform that into points for ourselves.”
Columbian, so far, has breached the 100-point mark in all of its games, averaging 117.7 points per game during its wins while norming 102.3 in losses.
The Dyip have an average winning margin of 18.7 but they get outscored by an average of 23 points during their losses.
“If you don’t make stops, that’s what happens,” said Dandan. “We’re No. 1 on offense, but then if we’re not going to improve defensively going deep into the conference we’re going to have problems.”
Dandan, however, feels his players will be able to develop a level of consistency during a two-week break as the league makes way for its All-Star festivities.
“This break is heaven sent,” said Dandan. “We will be able to regroup and that’s what we’re going to do. I need to shift their mindset to a better defensive mindset.”
