Late run helps Sumcad collar Carlos at the helm

Long-hitting Orlan Sumcad birdied two of his last three holes Friday to fire a three-under-par 69 and catch Jobim Carlos on top of the P3 million Philippine Masters at tree-lined Villamor in Pasay.

Sumcad picked up shots on Nos. 16 and 17 to salvage a 33-36 card for 212 after 54 holes as Carlos needed to birdie the 18th for a 74 to remain tied for the lead for the third straight day.

Jessie Balasabas had a double bogey 6 on No. 15 and signed a 74 to stay a shot off the joint leaders with Joenard Rates, who shared the lead with Carlos after 36 holes, but shot a third round 75.

Villamor was unforgiving, yielding only seven sub-par cards with Clyde Mondilla bowing out unceremoniously after ballooning to an 83 for 231.

Former Philippine Open champion Gerald Rosales shot a 73 to stay within two of the lead like unknown Nilo Salahog, who fired a 70.
