PVL: PetroGazz nabs second straight win, downs Iriga-Navy

PetroGazz maintained its steady climb and dismantled Iriga-Navy along the way with a three-seat beating, 25-22, 30-28, 25-13, to get its second straight win in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference Saturday at Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Angels started out the season with a miserable 0-3 card but have since featured in the winners’ column and improved to 2-3 while the Lady Oragons are in a downward spiral losing three straight to drop to 1-3.

Despite losing key players in Wensh Tiu and Rachel Austero, the Angels didn’t lose a step as new import Olena Lymareva-Flink paved the way with 16 points.

“We’re building a little bit of momentum here and I’m happy with the win we just need to practice more,” said Angels head coach Jerry Yee in Filipino. “Every coach would be happy with how this team played, we just need to go back and practice some more.”

Lymareva-Flink, who replaced the injured Kadi Kullerkann, was instrumental for the Angels in the third set with her back-to-back aces giving PetroGazz a 15-7 lead, and the foundation for the victory, in the final frame.

Substitute Alyssa Layug then did her part in the end-game scoring two straight points for the Angels’ 23-12 lead before back-to-back errors on the Lady Oragons’ side of the court gave PetroGazz the victory.

Cherry Nunag and Anastasiia Trach combined for 17 points to add to the Angels’ cause.

Lauren Whyte and Macy Ubben had 17 and 14 points, respectively, but their offensive exploits could not hold off Iriga-Navy’s disastrous 31 errors.
