Blue Eagles zoom to 7-0 start; Altas finally win, whip Warriors

Ateneo crushed Emilio Aguinaldo College, 108-44, to remain perfect in seven games in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan on Monday.

The Blue Eagles, shooting 59-percent from the field, led by as much as 66 points after a Jawuan White triple in the final 50 seconds.

“We didn’t come out and plan to lead by as much or blow out an opponent,” said Ateneo assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga. “We just wanted to run our offense. We are in the process of learning new sets and plays.”

Matt Nieto topscored for Ateneo with 14 points while Jolo Mendoza added 13. Adrian Wong and Mike Nieto also contributed 10 points apiece.

In another Group A match, Perpetual Altas also scored a rout, whipping University of the East, 95-75, for its first win after seven losses.
The Altas pounced on the listless Warriors to erect a start to post a 23-12 lead in the first period and never looked back.

Perpetual hiked its lead to 42-14 at the 4:40 mark of the third period behind one of seven triples by rookie Luke Sese, who fired game-high 25 points.
Alvin Pasaol paced UE (3-5) with 14 points.
In Group B, Far Eastern U grabbed the lead at 6-1 when it beat San Sebastian (3-3), 78-66.

Brandrey Bienes led the Tamaraws with 13 points while Ken Tuffin added 10.

San Sebastian was led by Regile Ilagan’s 21 points and Allyn Bulanadi’s 12.

The Gilas Cadets, already out of the tournament, ended their campaign with a 97-78 rout of the Mapua Cardinals.

Robert Bolick fired 13 and Kobe Paras chipped in 12 as the young nationals wound up with a 3-5 record.

The Cardinals, who fell to 3-3, trailed by 15 points before knotting the score at 57 off an Eric Jabel basket.
