MANILA, Philippines—Jobim Carlos-Raymundo Gonzales assembled a four-under-par 64 in four balls Tuesday to assume control in the first National Doubles Amateur championship at the AFP Golf Club.
Carlos-Gonzales opened and closed with birdies and picked up two more in between to erase a two-stroke first-round deficit to Gino Bunyi-Marvin Mendoza with a 138 total going into today’s combined-aggregate final round.
Bunyi and Mendoza, who fired a 72 in the foursomes on Monday, dropped two shots in their last three holes to settle for a 67-139 and allow Lawrence Celestino-Joey Huerva to catch them in second spot.
Celestino-Huerva assembled a bogey-free 65 to make it a three-way fight for the title.
Ricky delos Santos and Ricky Velasco, one shot off the pace in the first round, carded a 69 to slide to fourth at 142 while Eric Gallardo and JP De Claro pooled a 143 after a 69.
Lans Uy and Paolo Uy also surged ahead in Group II after a par 68 for a total of 143, five shots clear of erstwhile leaders Larry Patnongon and Joey Solis (74-148), while Samantha Martirez and Chanelle Avaricio kept their three-shot lead in ladies play.
