Davao, Malaysia earn gold medals in BVR Santa Ana
Davao’s Lot Catubag and Karean Quilario endured the heavy rains and strong wins to take down Iloilo’s DM Demontaño and Jackie Estoquia, 21-14, 21-14, for the gold medal in the Beach Volleyball Republic International Santa Ana Open Sunday in Santa Ana, Cagayan.
Catubag and Quilario, prior to competing in the Santa Ana Open, were also the gold medal winners in the Dagupan Open.
Article continues after this advertisementIn the men’s division Malaysia’s Raja Nazmi Hussin and Mohd Aizzat Zokri brushed off University of Visayas’ Kevin Juban and Raphy Abanto, 21-14, 21-18, for the gold.
Zokri and Hussin initially lost against Far Eastern University in the opening day of the tournament but used that loss as a jump-off point for their five-game winning streak en route to the title.
“Actually, it’s all about communication,” said Zokri after claiming the $3,500 cash prize.
Article continues after this advertisementTuguegarao’s Bea Tan and Charo Soriano won the bronze medal after surviving Harbor Pilot-Cebu’s Therese Ramas and Dij Rodriguez, 11-21, 21-16, 15-13.
Ato ni Bai’s Jade Becaldo and Calvin Sarte beat Czech Republic’s Dominik Samen and Martin Samec, 21-17, 21-19.
