More standouts honored in Collegiate Basketball Awards

MANILA, Philippines—More on-court heroes stepped up in a season of repeat champions.

And these varsity standouts will get their due when  the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps and Smart host the annual Collegiate Basketball Awards on Jan. 21 at the Gateway Suites in Cubao.

Three more players from UAAP champion Ateneo will join the early list of winners led by their teammates and All-Star Mythical Team members Greg Slaughter and Kiefer Ravena.

UAAP Finals MVP Nico Salva will receive the Pivotal Player plum for his consistent performance that helped the Blue Eagles capture a fourth straight crown.

FEATURED STORIES

Diminutive point guard Emman Monfort will earn the Maynilad Super Senior honor for playing a vital role in the Eagles’ title romps, while Kirk Long will receive the Defensive Stopper award for his superb showing on the defensive end.

The NCAA Pivotal Player plum will also go to San Beda center Dave Marcelo, who helped power the Lions to back-to-back crowns.

Letran’s Kevin Alas will receive the Energy Player distinction for his resolute play on both ends that towed the Knights to the NCAA Final Four.

Joining Ravena and Slaughter in the Mythical Team are San Beda’s Garvo Lanete and reigning MVPs Calvin Abueva of San Sebastian and Bobby Ray Parks of National University.

Ateneo tactician Norman Black will receive his fourth straight UAAP Coach of the Year award, while his NCAA counterpart Frankie Lim will get the same honor for steering
the Lions to their fifth championship in six
seasons.
