Onuaku confident as Meralco controls its fate during crucial stretch
The race for the top two spots in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup is filled with uncertainties and unstable footing but for Meralco’s Arineze Onuaku getting there is the only thing that matters to him and the Bolts.
Meralco sits at a second-place tie with TNT, who are holding identical 6-2 records and are a full game behind leaders Rain or Shine and Alaska that have 7-1 cards.
Onuaku, though, is confident they can break away from the pack and secure that sweet twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
“We’re definitely confident, we control our own destiny,” said Onuaku after the Bolts’ domination of Blackwater 102-75 Friday at Mall of Asia Arena.
And if there’s ever a benefit Meralco got late in its schedule, it’s that it will face all TNT, Alaska, and Rain or Shine in its last games.
Meralco will have the luxury of not waiting for the Elasto Painters, Aces, and KaTropa to lose to other teams, as the Bolts will now just have to play their cards right.
“It’s a good thing that we will play the teams ahead of us,” said Onuaku. “And everything will start from me, I know that and that’s the same approach I take for every game.”
Onuaku is the Bolts’ anchor averaging 19.38 points, 17.25 rebounds and 5.75 assists in the eight games he’s played.
“That’s my job, I mean you got a talented group and we’ve been working hard,” said Onuaku. “We got a few more games and we’ll try to win a top two spot.”
