Manila delivered a stellar home debut, leaning on big plays from Aris Dionisio as it overcame Bataan, 89-82, on Saturday night to barge into the win column of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Datu Cup at San Andres Sports Complex.
Dionisio, a star from St. Clare College, finished with 21 points, including the layup that sealed the victory for the All-Stars, who unveiled a lineup made up of former PBA players and collegiate standouts.
Roger Yap, Reil Cervantes and Adrian Celada made their presence felt with solid contributions on both ends as the All-Stars rallied from a 10-point deficit in the third period to spoil the debut of the revamped Bataan squad now being coached by Jojo Lastimosa.
The 40-year-old Yap had seven points and 11 assists.
Earlier, Navotas thumped Pasay, 83-75, with Levi Hernandez on the firing end.
Hernandez, the former Arellano standout, pumped in 26 points, joining forces with Rey Publico, Monbert Arong and Ron Dennison in the second half, where the Clutch finally seized control.
One of only two holdovers from last season’s team, Publico showcased a more polished offensive game with 22 points and nine rebounds, drawing praises from new coach Richie Ticzon.
“We named him team captain to serve as leader on the floor,” said Ticzon.
