MANILA, Philippines—Police  have yet to come up with leads in the attack on professional golfer Antonio “Ton” Asistio almost a week after he was shot and wounded by two still unidentified assailants in Marikina City.

Superintendent Danilo Macerin, deputy chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in the National Capital Region, however, expressed optimism that the police would soon have a good break.

“Hopefully, that will happen this week,” Macerin told the Philippine Daily Inquirer over the phone.

Macerin said that they were banking on the statement of the 22-year-old victim himself, who, he said, was still confined at The Medical City in Pasig after he sustained gunshot wounds in the left eye and upper back.

Macerin said that because of the young golfer’s condition, investigators would have to wait for the go-signal of his doctors before they could ask him questions that could shed light on the identity of his attackers.

Only he can give us their description because the people who were with him didn’t get a good glimpse at them, the police official said.

On December 26, Asistio was having drinks with friends in front of his house in New Marikina Heights Subdivision in Barangay San Roque when he was attacked.

Prior to this, his neighbors said that they saw a red car lingering in the area, prompting investigators to believe that the victim’s movements were already being monitored.

Asistio’s condition has reportedly stabilized, Macerin said, but he was still being supported by an oxygen tank.

He said that the young golfer was scheduled to undergo an operation two days ago, but the police official said he was unsure if this eventually pushed through.
