MANILA, Philippines—Maia Balce seized the first semifinal seat after demolishing Rafaella Villanueva, 6-2, 6-0, Monday in the girls’ 14-and-under singles of the 23rd Andrada Cup Group I tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Balce was visibly in much-better shape throughout the second-round skirmish in the week-long meet firing off the series of junior tournaments backed by the Philippine Tennis Association.
Charito Capadocia stunned second seed Dominique Ong, 6-1, 6-0, to set up a second round clash against Chloe Saraza, a 6-4,
3-6, 10-8 winner over Chrislyn Sioson.
Fourth seed Ingrid Gonzales played true to form and swamped Carla Arreza, 6-1,
6-2, to book a quarterfinal match against Francesca Santiago, a 6-2, 6-1 victor over Monica Cruz.
Caitlin Tordesillas survived a battle of
endurance in the first set before eventually toppling Bianca Catoto, 7-6(3), 6-2.
Tordesillas will face the winner of the second-round match between top-seed
Erika Manduriao and Andrea Amistad, who whipped Camille So, 6-1, 6-0.
In the boys’ division, Jeremiah Latorre ousted Joachim Samson, 6-1, 6-1, and
Carlos Austria booted out Ivan Cunanan,
6-1, 6-2, to advance against top seed Julian Dayrit in the 14-and-under category.
Aljon Talatayod sparkled in the 10-unisex following a surprising upset of second seed Diego Dayrit, 6-1, 6-0. He will tangle next with Miguel Vicencio, who eliminated Marvin Espina, 6-1, 6-0.
Juan Jugo whipped Mian Mmso, 6-2, 6-4, to move up against fourth seed Hiromasa Ishikawa, a 6-0, 4-6, 10-5 survivor over Alexandra Eala.
