Unseeded Jugo gains quarterfinals vs No. 5 Teng
MANILA, Philippines—Juan Enrico Jugo toppled third seed Enrico Ong, 6-3, 6-2, to make a surprise appearance in the quarterfinal round of the 12-under boys’ singles of the 23rd Andrada Cup Group I tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The unseeded Jugo was on fire on the get-go and never wavered for a straight-set victory that set him up for a duel with fifth-ranked Marraphael Teng, who posted a 6-0, 6-0 romp over Jerome Ignacio.
Favorites Arthur Pantino and Jacob Martin, meanwhile, breezed through their opponents as expected.
Article continues after this advertisementThe top-seeded Pantino crushed Maverick Legaspi, 6-0, 6-0, while No. 2 Martin also moved into the quarterfinals after whacking Pete Coteron, 6-1, 6-0.
But Pantino will get his hands full this time against No. 8 Gabrielle Tiamson, a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Jaremiah Co.
Martin drew No. 6 Manuel Balce III, who pulled off a hard-earned 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 triumph over never-say-die Joshua Austria.
