MANILA, Philippines—Marinel Rudas displayed the form sharpened from playing abroad in pulling off a 6-4, 7-5 upset of second seed Samantha Coyiuto Wednesday to crash into the semifinals of the centerpiece 18-under girls singles semifinals of the 23rd Andrada Cup Group 1 tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Rudas, a member of the national team to the Fed Cup, is gunning for a first title in a local tournament. But she will have to go through third seed Anne Castillo, who kicked out April Santos, 6-1, 6-0, to advance.
Akiko de Guzman trounced Nicole Cassandra Eugenio, 7-5, 6-3, to also make it to the semifinals against top seed Marian Jade Capadocia. The Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist Capadocia handily advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 thrashing of Macy Gonzales.
Unseeded Eric Olivarez Jr., son of former netter Eric Olivarez, downed Gabriel Gutierrez, 6-4, 6-2, to gain quarterfinals entry in the boys 18-under singles. He will face Romnee Kyle Joseph, who brushed off Jose Nicholas Tano, 6-3, 6-3.
Also making the quarters was Christian San Andres, who brought down seventh seed Juan Alfonso Opulencia, 6-3, 6-2, to also advance against No. 3 Joshua Andrew Cano, who shook off Paolo So, 6-2, 6-1.
Making waves in the girls 14-under were Francesca Santiago and top seed Erika Mae Manduriao, who beat their respective rivals to reach the semifinals.
Santiago stunned fourth seed Ingrid Mariz Gonzales, 6-0, 4-6, 10-8. She next faces Manduriao, who ousted Caitlin Tordesillas, 6-0, 6-2.
In 14-under boys action, Arwin Ayyalon Lumaban shocked sixth seed Enrico Luis Ong, 6-1, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals.
