MANILA, Philippines—Eric Olivarez Jr. picked up his second singles crown after a dominating show in the boys’ 18-under final even as national team member Marian Jade Capadocia prevailed as expected in the girls’ division over the weekend in the 23rd Andrada Cup Group 1 tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The 13-year-old Olivarez outgunned Christian San Andres, 6-0, 6-1, to rule the boys’ premier event after topping the 16-under with a 6-0, 6-3 thrashing of fourth seed Romnee Kyle Joseph last Saturday.
Capadocia, a member of the team that won a bronze in the last Southeast Asian Games, seized the 18-under crown with a 6-4, 6-1 win over national teammate Marinel Rudas.
Olivarez, a nephew of former national team stalwarts Eva and Edna Olivarez, proved simply too powerful for San Andres, who made it to the finals after cutting down seeded foes, including third seed Andrew Joshua Cano, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
Unseeded in the 18-under, Olivarez worked his way into the finals with impressive
conquests of top pick Calvin Canlas, 1-6, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals and fourth seed Joseph
6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
The fleet-footed Capadocia, who hails from Antique, wasn’t in trouble against Rudas.
Monica Therese Cruz and Vince Salas also wound up with two titles after scoring in the doubles with separate teammates.
Cruz, the girls’ 12-under champ, teamed up with Nicole Amistad in outlasting Ingrid Mariz Gonzales and Erika Mae Manduriao, 7-6
(7-3), 7-6 (7-5).
Salas, the boys’ 14-under titlist, partnered with Julian Dayrit in routing Tomas Puno and Jerome Romualdez, 6-0, 6-1.
Also winning in singles were Michael Francis Eala in the 10-under unisex, Arthur Craig Pantino in boys’ 12-under, Manduriao in girls’ 14-under, and Katrina Orteza in girls’ 16-under.
